General Engineering Program

Program Requirements

All new engineering students (including transfer students who have not completed all courses in the freshman engineering curriculum) are admitted into General Engineering. The General Engineering Program provides students an opportunity to explore various engineering fields while getting a sound academic preparation for engineering study.

General Engineering students who do not place into MATH 1040  or MATH 1060  are invited to participate in the General Engineering Learning Community (GELC). The goal of the GELC is to increase the retention of students in engineering majors who are underprepared for calculus when they enroll at Clemson University. To facilitate this retention, the program aims to provide additional academic support and an alternate course of study plan that extends the first-year courses through the summer to help students acclimate to college and address areas in need of attention specifically related to math performance.

First Semester Freshman Year Curriculum

Credits: 17-18

Footnotes

1 The combination of ENGR 1050  and ENGR 1060  or the combination of ENGR 1510  and ENGR 1520  may be substituted for ENGR 1020 .
2 Depending on a student’s math placement based on their Clemson Mathematics Placement Test (CMPT) score, ACT mathematics score, or SAT mathematics score, MATH 1040  and MATH 1070  may be substituted for MATH 1060 ; or the student may be required to take MATH 1030  and MATH 1050  before enrolling in MATH 1060 .
3 See General Education  Requirements. Three credits of General Education requirements must also satisfy the South Carolina REACH Act Requirement. See the South Carolina REACH Act Requirement in the Academic Regulations  section.

Second Semester Freshman Year - Overview

There are two possible pathways through the second semester freshman year curriculum, depending on the specific engineering major a student intends to pursue beginning in their sophomore year. Note that Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering allow students to follow either path; all other engineering majors require either Path 1 only or Path 2 only. For students enrolled in GELC, the two pathways for second semester freshman year and the required summer curriculum are shown at the bottom of this section.

Second Semester Freshman Year - Path 1

(Biomedical Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering majors)
